It is the white grape that occupies the biggest surface of national vineyards (approximately one-third of the total cultivated, about 450.000 hectares ).
It is one of the most cultivated grapes in the world. The Airen wines are mainly concentrated in Castilla La Mancha, but also in the regions of Valencia , Murcia and Madrid and in some Andalusian areas.
In the 15 th century it was known as Lairen, name by which is still known in Andalusia . It has been a very discredited variety, used to be blended with other varieties. Nowadays, the new vinification systems have managed to give tasty wines, soft and fruity and easy to drink, with character and full-body.
